South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment
(SAWTEE) organized a round table discussion on 15 June, 2018 with a primary
objective to discuss the current state of Nepal-China relations and to identify
the priorities for Nepal in upcoming negotiations during Prime Minister Oli’s
forthcoming state visit to China on June 19.
Clearly identifying national
interest; ensuring strategic independence and freedom of choices; linking
investments in trade and connectivity with productive capacity; exploring the
possibilities of Chinese investments in Renminbi, among others, were identified
by the panelists and discussants as the guiding factors for Nepal-China
relationships.
Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, former Under-Secretary-General of the United
Nations, laid the foundation for discussions with his comprehensive
presentation regarding current context of Nepal-China relations and important
elements to consider to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship. The panel
discussion, which included remarks from Dr. Rajan Bhattarai, Member of
Nepal-India Eminent Persons Group (EPF); Mr. Gyanendra Lal Pradhan,
