Competition Law for Consumer Protection

Forum for Protection of Consumer Interest (Consumer Forum) and SAWTEE jointly organized a programme titled "Competition Law for Consumer Protection" on 1 July 2005. The objective of the programme was to increase awareness of competition issues and also discuss complementarities of competition policy and consumer policy.





Presenting his paper on "Competition Law for Consumer Protection" Mr Ratnakar Adhikari, Executive Director of SAWTEE said that competition law would help promote healthy competition in the market.  He further added that promotion of healthy competition would not only help the business sector to flourish but would also be beneficial to the consumers. He also said that taking note of the complementarities between competition policy and consumer policy, the efforts towards promoting competition in the economy would in turn benefit consumers.

He also briefed the participants of the competition in the product as well as the service sector. He concluded that competition law should be immediately enacted so that healthy competition would prevail in the market which would also help the Nepalese industries to face international competition.

The paper was commented on by Mr. Shanti Ram Sharma, Director, Department of Commerce, Dr Sundar Mani Dixit, Founder President of the Forum for Protection of Consumer Interest,Advocate Indra Lohani,Secretary Supreme Court, Bar Association, Dr Govinda Dhakal,Executive Director of Local Development Training Centre, Dr Mangalsidhi Manandhar,President of Nepal Intellectual Council and Mr Subhash Nemwang, Former Minister for Law.         

The participants underlining the importance of competition law expressed their view that the law should be implemented without further delay.This delay would prove costly to the consumers as well as the business sector in Nepal they opined. They further said that implementation is the most crucial aspect of any law and policy and stakeholders should create a conducive environment for proper implementation of the law and policy. They emphasized on the need of building competition culture among the stakeholders, institutional development, supportive legislative measures and political will were among the other requirements for a conducive environment.
