National Alliance for Food Security (NAFOS)

Genesis

National Alliance for Food Security - Nepal (NAFOS) is a loose national network of more than 25 national and international non-government organisations (NGOs/INGOs) and other United Nations (UN) agencies including Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) - Nepal that are effectively working to ensure food security in the country. The Alliance was formed in 1999 at the initiative of ActionAid International Nepal. Since then, the alliance has been serving as a platform for raising food security concerns at the grassroots level in the country. It is continuously striving to create dialogues at the policy level so that concerns of the grassroots people can be heard and reflected in both the policy making and implementation process.

Mission

To create a critical mass both at the grassroots and policy levels to support the cause of Food Rights in Nepal particularly in the context of globalisation, liberalisation and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreements.

Objectives

The overall objective of NAFOS is to analyse the causes of food insecurity and sensitise the grassroots level people as well as policymakers and planners in order to ensure food security in particular for the poor, marginalised and vulnerable segments of the society. Specific objectives are:

Conduct policy research and advocacy programmes in order to identify the factors that hinder food production and food availability
Inform, educate and sensitise the stakeholders relating to forces of globalisation, liberalisation and threats following Nepal's accession to the WTO and its agreements such as Agreement on Agriculture (AOA), Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) and work closely with the government to ensure adequate safety nets for ensuring food security.
Effectively engage the media into the Alliance and organise "Media Sensitisation Programmes" so that key issues can be broadcast nationwide.

NAFOS's major fields of activities are:

Advocacy on food security issues
Networking with national and international partners for an open exchange of ideas and information
Research on different aspects of food security in the context of globalisation and liberalisation
Capacity building activities, trainings and workshops in the related fields.
Publication and dissemination of information and sensitisation of stakeholders

SAWTEE and NAFOS

SAWTEE accommodates the NAFOS secretariat. Given SAWTEE's active interest in food security issues in the backdrop of globalisation, liberalisation and the World Trade Organisation (WTO), it holds the loose alliance to endorse the cause of food security.
